What is a Sober Companion?

A sober companion is a certified practitioner who provides one-on-one support and guidance to individuals committed to recovery. Their role is to help clients maintain sobriety, navigate daily life, manage triggers, and stay accountable—especially during early recovery, transitions, or high-risk situations. A sober companion helps to create personalized plans to reinforce recovery, reduce relapse risk, and promote a healthy lifestyle. A sober companion will also explore supports in the community related to recovery.

WHAT DOES A SOBER COMPANION DO?

A sober companion lives alongside or travels with a client for a defined period (from a few days, a few weeks, to several months), providing intensive day-to-day guidance and support.

Core Functions:

  • Daily Structure and Recovery Routines

For example: Morning check-ins, meditation, exercise, nutrition plans, medication adherence, meeting attendance, self-care, and scheduled downtime—all in alignment with the client’s clinical recommendations and personal strengths.

  • Recognizing Triggers and Developing Coping Skills

Companions help identify the client’s high-risk people, places, and things, and offers alternatives and coping mechanisms in real time (pausing, grounding, meditation, prayer, journaling, calling a sponsor/therapist, etc.).

  • Compassionate Accountability

Daily goals made clear, frequent check-ins, and early intervention if risk rises.

  • Continuity of Care

A sober companion may coordinate with therapists, psychiatrists, primary care, recovery housing, family and employers, where applicable and with consent, thereby closing the gaps that often arise when a client moves forward in care.

  • Sober Travel, Transitions, and Crisis Navigation

When discharged from a program, flying home, starting a new job, or dealing with family conflict, are all peak times for risk. A sober companion anticipates these scenarios and plans the safer path.

About Me

My name is Dawn, and I am a grateful, recovering alcoholic. My recovery journey began in May of 1997 and has taken on many different manifestations over the past 25-plus years.

I am a New Jersey native, but have lived in Arizona for over 20 years, currently residing in Scottsdale, AZ with my dog, Maby. It is my goal to be of service, sharing the gifts of recovery, helping others reach their highest good.

I believe that being in recovery is a deeply personal journey that benefits from an open-minded approach to healing and growth. Embracing different solutions or modalities, such as therapy, support groups, meditation, exercise, or holistic practices, can provide a more comprehensive and individualized path to wellness.

As a certified sober companion with additional certifications in trauma conscious yoga, yoga for grief and loss, sound therapy, and mindful recovery practices, my mission is to walk alongside you as you navigate the challenges and gifts of recovery.

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.

I’ll meet you there.
